Jefferies Throughout the nineteenth century, newspapers covering Duval County had a number of correspondents that used pen names. Through the years I have only been able to identify one, until now. With the help of a family friend and researcher of the correspondent, I have concluded the “Jeffreys,” who covered Duval County for the Corpus Christi Caller from April 1887 through January 1888, was Dr. William C. Jefferies . Incidentally, the other writer that I have identified was John Williamson Moses who wrote under the name of “Sesom”. Dr. Jefferies , in fact, was one of the first non-Spanish-speaking individuals to come to Duval County. According to Robert R. Webb, the doctor first came to San Diego in 1868.
