Mach 11

Juan Saens was found not guilty of theft of cattle. Horse stealing was also prevalent in upper Nueces, Duval and Live Oak Counties.

March 12

El Senor de la Carrera grant was resurveyed on March 12-14 and 16, 1868 and a judgment and decree were issued to Benito Gonzales Garcia on October 31, 1868. The suit was filed on May 21, 1864, under “an act to ascertain and adjudicate certain legal claims for land against the state, situated between the Nueces and the Rio Grande rivers” approved on February 11, 1860. The grant had 15 labores.

March 13

Cecilio Valerio with 126 men attacked Confederates at Los Patricios in southern Duval County. Valerio also raided a ranch 10 miles south of San Diego and drove off 60 head of cattle belonging to King and let one of King’s vaqueros, a Tejano named Lucas, hanging from a tree.

March 14

Charles Shaw appointed postmaster at Realitos. The report from the Concepcion free school; H. H. Murdock, named Teacher for the Month of February, School had 33 pupils enrolled, 28 of scholastic age.

Eugenio Perez, on behalf of his mother Maria Antonia Trevino, wife of Dionicio Perez, who was absent, from the sale, sold to Juan Puig 353 head of sheep and goats for $351,50.

San Diego Methodists having a festival. Proceeds to pay minister’s salary, putting in new benches, and improving the church. Featured items are the sale of kitchen aprons and washing dresses for children (15 to 30¢).

March 17

San Diego removed the embargo on travel from Alice. Anyone can go there without paying 50¢ to health officer. The doctor would issue a certificate to allow entry into town. There was a small pox epidemic.
