April 8

Father Peter Bard


Father John P. Bard ordained in Corpus Christi on April 8, 1877. His mission territory stretched all the way to Los Angeles station, until the area up to Realitos. Was assigned to the new Aguilares Mission in 1892. Father Bard was left with churches in Alice, Benavides, Concepcion, and Mindieta as well as 163 ranches.

April 9

Protestant church of San Diego at old Spann Building held a church festival with vocal and instrumental music; post office, fish pond, grab-bags; etc. 10¢ and 5¢ admission for children over 10.

State Representative N.G. Collins called up and got approval for a bill to extend the San Diego and Corpus Christi Railroad for two years.

April 11

On April 11, 1892, Manuel Flores, son of Ventura Flores (one of six sons of Julian Flores) and Juan Hinojosa borrowed money against their land from E.A. McCampbell. On the same day, Hinojosa also mortgaged his land, 556 17/31 acres, to McCampbell.

Catholic Church was packed for first communion. Some 25-30 boys and girls made communion. Started at 8 o’clock. Girls all dressed in white. They all performed nicely. Areta Garcia and Priscilla Buckley assigned special parts. Presence of Bishop drew many who may otherwise not come.

April 13

Copeland steam bicycle 1884

Benny Barnes and Oliver Caldwell took off from Collins in bicycles. Barnes made it to San Diego the next day, a distance of 15 miles. It took him 1 hour and 40 minutes. After chatting and joking with the San Diego bicycle boys a while, Barnes boarded the eastbound train with his bicycle and returned to Corpus.

April 14

A large crowd attended Methodist church festival. Proceeds could reach $100, despite scarcity of money . Helpers included Gertrude Gravis, Lillie Ridder, Nettie Smith, Ardel Lewis, Carrie Farnum, Addie Luby; Miss Croft, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Coymer and Mrs. Peterson.
