Horrible Murder

A jealous episode at the Ranch of Mateo Sendejo, six miles west of Mendieta, resulted in the death of Sendejo’s daughter and horrible mutilation of her jealous husband. Eusebio Diaz, 28, who had worked for N.J. Delamar about five years had been injured on the head the previous year and had been “easily excited” ever since. He became enamored with fourteen-year-old Casimira Sendejo and insisted on marrying her despite her young age. The priest had a problem with marrying them so they “hideaway” to San Diego where the county judge married them. Casimira reportedly repented at the last moment because it was against her father’s will and she had another sweetheart. She reportedly treated her husband cooly. He became exasperated with her conduct until Sept 1, 1885, when at the ranch called on her while she was grinding corn, in the kitchen. He asked for a clean shirt. She refused. His mother-in-law took him the shirt. The young wife followed and an argument ensued. He began firing, the first shot tore away her jaw. She turned to run crying to her mother for help. The second shot hit her under right arm piercing her lung. She fell dying into mother’s arms.

Diaz placed the muzzle of the pistol on his head and fired three shots. He threw pistol down in disgust and resorted to cold steel. Grabbing a dirk (short dagger) from his boot and slit his throat falling back in bed.

Doctors, lawyers, a priest, and a constable were sent for at San Diego. Three bullets were removed from the murderer’s head and his throat was sewed up and he sat up and talked. After his recovery, he was taken to jail. It was one of the most horrible murders in memory.
